Off the Mojo Wire

Husbands Dress As Wives For A Day

Nissan ad

I don't understand Japanese, so I was a little perplexed when I viewed this Nissan ad on YouTube. But Aunty Marlena passed along this story from Hawaii News Now that explained what was going on.

I would love to see a USA version of this ad, but I am not holding my breath.

Texas Mayor Comes Out As Transgender

Jess Herbst

Aunty also passed along this story from the New York Times about Jess Herbst, the mayor of New Hope, TX, made an official announcement that she is transgender.

According to the Times article, "Ms. Herbst informed residents in a statement on the town’s website about the change, and the joys of her life as a woman, including her preference in pronouns and the endurance of her marriage."

I'm so tired, I'm feeling so upset

All day and all of the night, I get e-mails from Google Alerts, which monitors "the web for interesting new content" on topics I want to know about.

About 95% of the alerts I receive are on the topic "transgender." Each e-mail alert typically contains one to a half dozen new web content about "transgender." I typically receive one transgender alert every hour or so, therefore, on an average day, I may receive 24 to 144 new transgender web contents.

It didn't used to be that way.

Two or three years ago, there were only a handful of transgender alerts each day. That was before Caitlyn and before the right wing and/or "Christian" bathroom fetishists went apeshit about transpeople peeing in the same pots where they pee.

Everyday I read stories about some judge or attorney general ruling against laws and policies that favor transpeople or politicians advocating the same. And then there are the religious folks who preach against us never taking under consideration what Jesus would do.

I am very tired of reading bad news that makes me sad and upset. Even the good news make me sad because often it is only temporary and will soon be short-circuited by the haters.

When will it end?

(Stop the world, I want to get off.)

This and That Thursday

In the news...

A few days ago, Stan Jones posted this 1979 womanless pageant photo on Pinterest. This event took place in Burns, Oregon, and I could not help wondering if any of these gurls are now militia men or women.

On the tube...

Last night, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) showed Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. It was on past my bedtime, so I did not watch it, but I have seen it before and recommend it.

The plot, according to IMDB, "The Disciples of James Dean meet up on the anniversary of his death and mull over their lives in the present and in flashback, revealing the truth behind their complicated lives. Who is the mysterious Joanne and what's the real story behind Mona's son, James Dean Junior?"

Karen Black plays Joanne and is the key character from the perspective of a trans-chick flick.

In the air...

Frequent Femulate readers know that I go to Dayton, Ohio, every May to attend Hamvention. I already made my hotel reservations, but I am trying to decide how to travel to and from Dayton.

In the past, I have made the 735-mile trip by automobile with me driving solo both ways and I have learned to hate it, especially the return trip which I do in one day. After 13 hours on the road last year, I told anyone who asked that I would fly this year. I have said that before and ended up driving, but this year, I am seriously considering flying.

And if I fly, I will do it as a woman.

I have made many roadtrips including the Dayton trip, as a woman, but I have never flown as a woman. Jenn, one of the gurl hams I usually see at Hamvention sent me this link to a recent article about flying transgender. Despite that less than encouraging article, flying as a woman does not worry me; I will be thrilled to do so.

What gives me pause about flying as a woman is how to pack. For my Dayton roadtrips, I typically have two big pieces of luggage, my makeup tackle box and a computer bag. So I will definitely have to pack differently if I fly pretty.

Bad News

father-of-the-bride-300wide "Major broadcast and cable news networks are failing in their coverage of the transgender community, prioritizing sensational depictions of transgender people while ignoring important transgender stories..."

Media Matters tracked transgender coverage on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, Telemundo and Univision during January and February 2015 and the results are disturbing. Instead of concentrating on substantive transgender issues, the networks preferred to concentrate on Bruce Jenner rumors, Chelsea Manning's hormone therapy and the like.

It's no wonder that we have such a poor public image and are being locked out of bathrooms throughout the USA! (By the way, it's no surprise that the big networks practically ignored the bathroom legislation issue.)

And transpeople were seldom invited to be part of the discussion to speak for themselves. "As GLAAD has noted, 'transgender people are the experts to talk about transgender people.' The absence of trans individuals makes it easier for networks to create negative, misleading, or dehumanizing depictions of transpeople with impunity.

In those rare cases that transpeople were able to speak "about their experiences and community, the impact they had on the tone and content of media coverage was nothing short of transformative."

Enough from me; read it for yourself here.

Bradley Manning Plans To Live As A Woman

chelsea_manning

WASHINGTON, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Bradley Manning, sentenced to 35 years in military prison for the biggest breach of classified U.S. documents in U.S. history, said in a statement on Thursday she is female and wants to live as a woman named Chelsea.

"As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me. I am Chelsea Manning, I am a female," Manning, 25, said in the statement read on NBC News' "Today" show.

"Given the way that I feel and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible," Manning said. "I also request that starting today you refer to me by my new name and use the feminine pronoun."

Headmistress

2013-04-23_holyoke

After returning home from The Conference of Tolerance and Acceptance where I presented "Femulate: the Art of Becoming Womanly," my wife quizzed me about my day, particularly who attended my talk and what did they ask.

I told her all about it and later - after she had time to think about it - she said that I should be a "headmaster" for transgender kids.

"Wow - where did that come from?" I thought to myself.

Out loud, I said, "Yeah, but how do you get a job like that?"

She had no idea and neither did I.

It is something I would love to do, I just have to figure out a way to do it.

By the way, that was the first time in a very long time that I received a word of encouragement from my wife about me being en femme.

Another by the way, the photo up top shows me with Phoebe Scott at the Conference on Saturday. Phoebe mentors LGBT youth in Western Massachusetts. After she attended my workshop at the True Colors Conference last month, she asked if I would speak to her kids. I agreed, which resulted in my invitation to the Conference on Saturday.

Fashion Note: my dress and jewelry are from Avon, my shoes are from Nine West. Also, I loved Phoebe's outfit.

T News

Over the weekend, I added a new feature to the blog called "T News." It lists the latest transgender-related headlines with links to the rest of the stories wherever they may appear on the Internet. ("T News" is just below the Members photos in the sidebar.)

Today

I will be out en femme all day on Tuesday.

I want to pick up a few things for my upcoming Dayton trip, so I will visit some of my favorite stores in the morning.

In the afternoon, I will do outreach at two Human Sexuality classes at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.

You can expect a full report here in a day or two with photos, of course!

EEOC Ruling Protects Transgender Employees

"The Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) issued a ruling on Monday that provides protection from workplace discrimination for transgender individuals. The ruling holds that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination against employees or job applicants on the basis of race, gender, color, religion, and national origin, should be applied to transgender individuals."

Transgender News

Don't know if you get over to The Huffington Post website much. (I do everyday.)

A few weeks ago, I noticed that HuffPost now has a (Transgender News page) that centralizes the transgender news articles that used to be scattered all over HuffPost.

The Transgender News page also includes blog postings from various transgender-oriented bloggers.

It is worth bookmarking; I added it to my Tool Links list on the right sidebar of this blog.

ts model in Givenchy ad

lea_t “Riccardo Tisci loves a bit of androgony and male-female mix as much as the next Givenchy fan, but he’ll be blurring the lines between gender a little further next season by using a transsexual model in Givenchy’s AW10 ad campaign.

“But Lea T – a Brazilian with a bonestructure to die for, formerly known as Leo – isn’t any old transsexual, she’s a long-time friend and personal assistant of the designer and, coincidently, a former fit model for his own line.”

President Obama Signs Anti-Hate Crime Bill Into Law

Protects Trans Folks, Too!

Earlier today, President Obama signed the anti-hate crime bill into law, which is the first major piece of civil rights legislation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

The Matthew Shepard Hate Crime Prevention Act bears the name of a gay college student from Wyoming who was brutally tortured and murdered by two attackers in 1998. Its passage also honors the memory of Senator Ted Kennedy, who fought tirelessly for more than a decade to expand federal anti-hate crime protections to include such crimes.

This historic anti-hate crime law will:

* Allow federal authorities to more easily investigate and prosecute crimes motivated by race, color, or beliefs;

* Update the law to include crimes motivated by disability status, gender, or sexual orientation; and

* Strengthen federal support for state and local law enforcement agencies in the investigation and prosecution of hate-motivated violence.
