It works!

I learned quickly that there are a number of advantages to sitting to urinate. So much so that I sit to pee in boy mode, too.

In boy mode a few days ago, I sat to pee as a good girl should and as I dropped my drawers, my iPhone slipped out of my back pocket into the toilet bowl! I retrieved it as quickly as possible and dried it off as best as I could. I thought all was well until I made a phone call – there was no sound emitting from the phone!

I soon discovered that there was water in the headphone jack and the iPhone interpreted the water as an inserted headphone plug. Thus, the iPhone defaulted to headphone mode; it was sending audio to the headphone jack instead of the speaker.

I messed around with the phone for an hour trying to get the water out of the jack, but no luck. I dreaded taking the iPhone apart again, so I decided to first try a trick that worked in the past with my daughter's drowned iPhones: put the phone in a bed of uncooked rice to absorb the moisture.

Happy to say, when I retrieved the phone from the rice bowl the next morning, all was well with my iPhone!

And I learned my lesson: from now on, I will leave my iPhone in my purse when I sit to pee.

Battery Day

Lately, the batteries in my iPhone and MacBook Pro have been discharging rapidly. The iPhone is over five years old and the MacBook is over six years old, so I figured it was time to replace their original batteries.

Amazon sells replacement battery kits for $15 and $50 respectively. Both kits include all the tools required for the task.

I viewed how-to videos on YouTube. The only difficult part of the tasks seemed to be removing the old batteries, which were attached to the iPhone and MacBook cases with a two-sided tape-like adhesive. In the past, I've handled worse do-it-yourself computer tasks successfully, so I ordered the batteries from Amazon.

Saturday was Battery Day.

The iPhone battery replacement was not too bad. Working with the tiny screws with my 68-year-old eyes was the most difficult part of the task.

Removing the two-sided tape was a little tricky. You are supposed to grab the tape at one end of the battery and pull it out from under the battery, but the tape kept ripping in my fingers tips. I finally used a needle nose plier to get a good grip on the tape and pulled it out.

The job took about 30 minutes from start to finish and was a success. The iPhone is now like new with regard to its battery discharge rate.

The MacBook Pro battery replacement was easier than I expected because the glue holding the battery to the computer case had dried out over the past six years and it did not take much prying with a small chisel to free the battery. It took about 45 minutes to do the job and like the iPhone, the MacBook Pro's battery discharge rate is like new now.

I would have completed the MacBook battery replacement more quickly except that I had a big surprise when I opened the case: dust all over the interior of the computer including large dustballs, as you can see in the photo above. It took an extra 10 to 15 minutes to remove all the dust before I screwed the cover back on to the MacBook case.

I was very pleased with the results. Besides saving money, I also saved time by avoiding a visit to the Apple store.

Working as a Woman

Returning to work on Friday after working as a woman on Thursday was a non-issue.

One co-worker mentioned that there was a woman in my cubicle on Thursday and I retorted that I kicked her out of my cubicle. Ha ha!

Another co-worker commented that I was much taller dressed as a woman. When I explained that I was wearing 4-1/2-inch heels, he said maybe he should start wearing heels, too. (He is by far the shortest male at work.)

Also, I visited the lab technician who did not recognize me on Thursday and she remarked, "Good job."

Nice things I noted working as a woman on Thursday:

The ladies' room is much nicer than the men's room. It is cleaner and there is a pleasant air scent in the ladies' room that is lacking in the men's room.

The guys at work treated me as a lady. Do they see a woman and automatically act a certain way? For example, after lunch, I washed my dish and as I was returning to my cubicle, the dish slipped from my hand and shattered on the floor. A young engineer saw me bending down, struggling in my heels trying to pick up the pieces and offered to help me. I gladly accepted his offer. Maybe I am wrong, but I doubt that I would have received the same offer if I was in boy mode.

Annoying things I noted working as a woman on Thursday:

Typing at my computer keyboard and using the touch screen of my iPhone with long fingernails takes some getting used to.

Mysteriously, I ran one of my thigh highs. It was no big deal because the run was on the inner side of my leg and did not show, but it was annoying because I have no idea what caused it.

Putting in an 8-hour day working as a woman requires maintenance. Before I went out during my lunch hour, I visited the ladies' room to fix my hair and makeup and I did the same later in the afternoon.

Coincidentally, Daily Makeover's post yesterday was "How to Refresh Your Makeup in 3 Minutes or Less." I recommend reading it to all you working girls.

Last week, Apple released a new version of the iPhone operating system (iOs 7) and after I installed it, I thought that the quality of the Camera app photos had deteriorated.

I first noticed the problem at One Big Event last Saturday when photo after photo looked dark and a little blurry. I chalked it up to operator error and forgot about it until Thursday at work when my boss used my iPhone to take photos of me and they also came out dark and blurry.

When I returned to my desk, I researched the Internet to find out if this was a known anomaly and if there was a fix for it.

Here is a fix I found that seemed to take care of the problem: Go to Settings > General > Restrictions and make sure Allow: Camera is on.

Your mileage may vary, but that fix worked for me.

Now that I own an iPhone, I am considering not lugging my laptop and digital camera to Dayton.

With my iPhone, I can write and post to my blog, do e-mail, and take photos.

If I bring my digital camera to take photos for blog posts from Dayton, then I have to bring my laptop because it is my only gateway for transferring photos from my camera to the blogosphere. Bringing the camera and laptop also necessitates bringing their battery chargers, a spare camera battery, a cable to connect the two, and a bag to carry the laptop.

I can type faster and more accurately with my laptop, but to tell the truth, during Hamvention there is not much time to blog. I usually post a few words and a photo each day, which is as easy as pie with my iPhone.
