Throwback Thursday: Cross His Heart, Too

playtex_parody

Today's Throwback Thursday goes back nearly 20 years when I started doing trans art and posting my creations on my old blog nFem (anybody remember nFem?).

I originally created this Playtex ad parody in black and white because (1) the copy of the original ad that I had to work with was in black and white and (2) even if I had a full-color version of the ad, my Photoshop skills back then were not good enough to create a reasonable facsimile of a real ad.

Recently, I found the full-color version of the ad and now that my Photoshop skills have improved, I decided to reboot the Playtex ad parody that I created before the turn of the century. I hope you enjoy it.

By the way, the original ad was not a Playtex ad; rather it was an ad for Sears bras and girdles (Sears had everything).

Smile for the Day

A lot of my incoming e-mail consists of advertisements including ads from businesses that sell women's clothing.

Monday morning, I smiled when I received my daily e-missive from ShopBop and saw that its subject was "We'll Wear What She's Wearing."

Yes, I will!

Black Velvet or Virginia Slims?

www.Femulate.org On Friday, I asked if anyone was familiar with the urban legend about a male model posing as a female in the Black Velvet whisky print advertisements that began appearing circa 1970.

I received a response from Brenda, who claimed that the male model posing as a female was in a Virginia Slims cigarette advertisement, not a Black Velvet whisky ad. She added that the model in question was a blond wearing a denim shirt.

I searched the Internet and found a lot of Virginia Slims ads, but none featuring a model in a denim shirt.

And so it goes!

Black Velvet (Not Friday) On My Mind Again

black-velvet-ad-2 Remember the Black Velvet whisky advertisements featuring beautiful women wearing black velvet outfits (usually evening gowns).

"The first Black Velvet Lady, Patricia Victoria Miller, was introduced to the world in 1969 as an advertisement tool for Black Velvet. Since that time, such famous names as Christie Brinkley, Cybill Shepard, Kim Alexis, Cheryl Tiegs, Micah Wylde, and Kelly Emberg have all been Black Velvet Ladies." (Source:  Wikipedia)

Out of the blue yesterday, I received an e-mail from Stephen who wrote, "I recall reading that one of the models in a Black Velvet ad was actually a male. Is that true?"

That was news to me. I had never heard that urban legend and I wonder if there is anything to it. Stephen admitted that he did not recall the source of the story.

Does anyone have any information regarding this?

She's Got Legs

Stephanie found this image on flickr and sent me the link as an example of an interesting ad parody. Turns out that I actually created the parody years ago (I'm guessing about 2005). Stephanie suggested that I post it again, so here it is!

Transphobic Tampon Ad

2012-1-3_libra_ad

“A tampon maker has been branded 'outrageously transphobic' over its new advert.

“Critics say the television spot for Libra [brand tampons] implies transgender people 'are not real women because they do not menstruate,’” according to today’s online edition of the Daily Mail, which you can read here.

Transition Wisely

I received an e-mail this morning with the subject "Transition Wisely."

At first blush, I was surprised to find an e-mail on that subject in my male e-mail in-box, then I realized it was an advertisement from Bluefly, a clothing retailer.

I was very amused!

I hope everyone has a great holiday!

Gender Ambiguity in Advertising

Black Velvet (Not Friday) On My Mind

BlackVelvet1974 While I was admiring the holiday dresses online at Spiegel this morning I had a flashback.

I recalled driving around town in the mid-1970s and encountering a billboard for Black Velvet Whisky featuring a blonde in a black velvet dress sprawled seductively across 50 feet of horizontal advertising space.

I had seen similar advertisements in magazines, but this was my first Black Velvet Girl billboard encounter. The combination of the model's beauty, the contrast of between her blonde do and her black dress, and her immense size was dazzling. I kept an eye out for more Black Velvet billboards during my automobile outings and during the next half-dozen years or so, I had many encounters.

Guys encountering such advertisements might wish that they could bed a Black Velvet model. Gals encountering such advertisements might wish they could look like a Black Velvet model.

I wished I could do both.
