Slacks

I enjoy film noir and Sunday morning I watched Gun Crazy on TCM. It is classic film noir and I can’t look away when it is on.

The film was released in 1950 and I noticed this bit of 1950 dress coding that appeared in the middle of the film.

After a 20-something woman working in office hands over some paperwork to her supervisor, a 50-something woman, the supervisor remarks, “May I ask why you are wearing slacks?”

Young woman responds, “It’s all I had today. My dry cleaning hadn’t come back.”

Supervisor warns, “I’ll expect you tomorrow in a skirt.”

“Yes, Miss Sifert,” the young woman acquiesces.

It looks like all the girls at Casa Stana got their hair done at the same salon. :-)

  2. Slacks? They're good for getting up on the roof to replace shingles or changing the oil in a vehicle. They are definitely NOT my go to garment. The last time I wore such a thing was to my mother's funeral in late September of 2024. Out of my 48 dresses I ought to be able find something to wear.

  3. I remember seeing that photo of Robert and Tony en femme in the Newark Star-Ledger, when "Sugar" debuted on Broadway . What really stuck in my mind was a quote in the article from one of Robert Morse's daughters - " Mommy's prettier, but Daddy has nicer dresses" !

  4. It looks like that pretty office employee must have gotten a professional tuck to be able to squeeze into those skinny jeans!

  5. Sadly some women prefer slacks with knee highs but real femulators prefer Hanes and Short skirts. Hugs Brenda

  6. I’ve yet to wear slacks out and about, but do own a few pairs and have worn jeans out on several occasions.
Still not right sure about the dresses as menswear Stana. I sort of don’t want to wear a dress and go back to being called him or sir.

    1. As a man, I wear dresses. So in my case, dresses are menswear. I prefer to be sir'ed but if I'm ma'amed it's no big deal.

  7. I have 162 dresses. Slacks: zero, nil, nadda, zilch!! When I want to wear jeans or slacks it is men's wear. I was raised in the 1950's and 1960's. Women who wore pants were frowned upon. Little girls got away with wearing shorts during the summer until a certain age when a dress requirement was imposed. During the coldest winter day girls were required to wear skirts/dresses in school. All the girls wore "snow" pants under their dresses/skirts that were removed upon reaching the classroom. In the early 1970's my wife had to adhere to a dress code of dresses/skirts in an office environment. She would curse the cold as she waited for the elevated train.

  8. I went out in leggings / slacks only the once. It was not good for my morale. In Marks & Spencers a grandmother covered her grandchild's eyes with her hand to prevent the child seeing the horrible sight. Since then I have stuck to skirts and dresses with rather more success.

  9. Stana, the side picture of you in the sparkly green evening dress is one of your best.
You would certainly win the pageant.
