On Wednesday, Unknown commented, “It's always nice to be noticed by men, but when they start following you around, it becomes worrisome. I remember giving my high-heeled legs a break in Montreal sitting on a park bench. A guy walked by, then came by again and on his second look he commented, “Nice legs honey, we need more women wearing short skirts and heels.” I mumbled thank you and then became concerned if he came by again. I got up and left and yeah it was Stana short…”
I resemble that remark! LOL
Seems like I have a reputation for wearing short hemlines.
My excuse is that my skirt’s not too short – my legs are too long!
There is actually some truth to my excuse. At my height, most skirts and dresses that fit me are going to have hemlines above the knee. Even midi dresses fall above my knees.
But with my so-called shapely legs, is there anything wrong with that?
Personally, I think that my legs are ok, but other people have convinced me that they are more so. My legs have always received good grades. My mother often said I had beautiful legs (and that “you should have been a girl with legs like yours”). My wife and other genetic women have admitted that I have nicer legs than they do. Friends and strangers have praised my legs. A friend’s spouse even nicknamed me “Legs,” which is quite a coincidence because when she was an office girl, my mother was nicknamed “Leggy” in recognition of her shapely gams (like mother, like son).
Who am I to argue? The consensus is that I have great legs, so they meet the qualification to be shown and height is not a cause for disqualification.
But does my age disqualify me?
For starters, I don't look (or act) my age. Even in boy mode, I look younger than my age. In girl mode, with makeup and a wig piled on, I look even younger. But what’s age got to do with it?
I honestly think I look good in short skirts despite my age, real or apparent. Until I am convinced otherwise, my skirts will be short... Stana short.
While I was preparing today’s post, I was watching NBC’s The Today Show and noticed that host Savannah Guthrie was wearing a dress that was extremely Stana short! (Savannah is 52 years old and 5'10" tall.) |

Whilst I'm not as tall as you at 5 10 I am above average and certainly am tall enough to find that hem lines can be an issue, I like a hem line either above or below the knee but all too many skirts and dresses dangle inconclusively around about knee height being neither one thing nor the other. Although these days modesty is tending me more often towards a longer length shorter is more fun!
ReplyDeleteStana, are you being hilarious again? Please measure the hem to the knee to make sure we have a baseline figure for "Stana Short". I called that out because I too have nice legs and tried to recall if there ever was a pic of you in a long dress. My mother often said I had beautiful legs (and that “you should have been a girl with legs like yours”) is exactly what my mother used to say to me and I wonder if that set the stage to my crossdressing development.? i know several times I wish I could show her how great they looked in black stockings and black patent stilleto heels. oddly over time the hair on my legs naturally disappeared but stayed on my arms, chest and head. OK that solves that problem. I tried some longer below the knee outfits but I never felt comfortable until I pulled the hem up.So you may shop at Tall Girl but we know you make a bee line for the "Leggy " racks clearance section right away. Hugs Brenda. BTW a downloadable Stana Short hemline ruler would help all readers get it right without a fuss. Maybe add a F to M clothing conversion chart but we all probably already know that but the eurpoean sizes get tricky.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that this time of year as women wear hose and boots hemlines go up.
ReplyDelete"Too short" is a matter of opinion. As my Great Aunt Mae used to say, "When you sit down, if you flash your 'assets' to the whole world, your skirt MIGHT be a tad short"
ReplyDeleteAnd I have been told my my sister-in-law AND mother-in-law that I have the best legs in the family.
"Speeches should be like skirts: long enough to cover everything but short enough to hold the audience's interest."
ReplyDeleteIs this a quote, I see you've used inverted commas, or are you laying claim to it? Either way I think I may use this.
DeleteThat's a quote from Winston Churchill.
DeleteYou go, gurl! I appreciate that you wear short skirts - because I do too! I do so because I have been told so many times by various women while in boy mode that I should have been a woman because I have beautiful legs. IMO there's nothing wrong with showing off your assets!
ReplyDeleteI am six foot and know the difficulty of finding dresses that fit my height. Yes, most hit at the knee, =/- an inch or two. Floor length can become midi, and midi can become just below the knee. The difficulty with height is a dress with a defined waist. Most off the rack dresses are made for the average height woman. But, on a tall woman or guy the waist line rises up the torso. I end up looking like an old guy (me, late 70's) with his belt hiked up to his nipple line. Yuck! IMHO, the shortness of a dress can be tempered with a nice choice of hosiery and boots, so the effect of color makes the ensemble appear as one. One hazard of a short dress is sitting down where you sink into the stuffed chair or sofa and your knees are higher than your rear and the dress slide too far down, resulting in constantly tugging at the hem so your panty is not showing. One has to learn and practice the mannerisms of a woman, so that does not happen.
ReplyDeleteStana short, I like it!
ReplyDeleteAs I run, bike, and swim (I do shorter triathlons) I've been told by my female friends I have good legs (and of course they look better in heels and hose). I was told by a GG once in a Savers I should stick to short dresses because I had great legs.
But my favorite comment was at a Nordstrom. I was trying on a shorter dress and a guy who was waiting for his wife and he said "You have phenomenal legs. You might as well show them off."
And because I didn't/couldn't wear Stana short dresses and skirts when I was young, I'm making up for lost time now.
I love skirts of all lengths and I go through phases, currently I’m in “short” territory because they look so very chic with opaque tights at this time of year. I’m the same age as the NBC news reader and like others here have been praised for my legs. Last weekend I was told I looked Parisienne with a short (and snug) cheque skirt with navy tights. Smoke em if ya got em!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, my legs are a bit too muscular, calves in particular. So it looks out of place if I wear short skirts (the traditional 24" or less). Also, I have a longer torso so I need longer skirts to wear them high waisted to look hourglass balanced. Most of my skirts are knee/below the knee (27", 30") or just maxi-skirts or column skirts (34" 36").
ReplyDeleteWhatever the length, gotta wear what makes you most comfortable about yourself. What makes you feel authentic.

one plus to being tall-I've found some great bargains at Ross and Burlington on maxi's and gowns--why? they have ended up with some that are perfect for me length-wise but are designed in such a way that alteration would ruin the dress.
ReplyDeleteErgo 95% of women are out of luck-off to clearance
If I swap out a dress for a regular girl height with. Skirt then my silk blouse will be ok. I tried a summer dress I had but never wore and its waist line is way off making me look silly. I need to check out Tall Girl for longer dresses with the Stana Short hemline. Brenda
ReplyDeleteNothing beats a great pair of legs + if you've got it, flaunt it + age is just a number = Stana short!
ReplyDeleteShort skirts certainly suit you, Stana, and Savannah too. However I prefer midi (ie mid-calf) ones. Although I do have a couple of pencil skirts, most of mine are A-line or other generously cut skirts. Firstly, they tend to give me more of a waist, and hence an hourglass figure. (This is especially so with hip pads underneath.) Secondly, the material can have a feminine life of its own, whether billowing in the wind, flowing when I walk, or spread around me when I sit down.
ReplyDeletePenny from Edinburgh.
When I was a teenager my mom used to say “ you should have been a girl with legs like that “. Sound familiar. My wife even compliment me when we first meet. We had an above ground pool for years. All the females would ask about my legs how nice they are. I’m considering carpis for the summer @ the knee. Show off my calves even in public. So it goes!!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading all the comments from everyone saying how nice they've been told their legs are. Perhaps we need a sexy legs gallery
