Motherwear and Sisterwear

Home alone in my teens usually found me wearing items from my mother’s and sister’s wardrobes. Both were tall women, so their clothes fit me more or less despite my topping out at 6 feet 2. Yes, at that height, their skirts and dresses were “Stana short,” but since I was only dressing in the confines of my home, hemlines were not a deal breaker.

Middle-aged, Mom’s wardrobe was matronly, so I only borrowed from her collection of foundation garments, hosiery and high heels. On the other hand, my sister was just two years younger than me, so I used her wardrobe for her skirts, tops, dresses, etc., which were stylish for a girl my age.

Like me, Mom was very neat and organized, so when I borrowed something from her, I made a mental note of how it was folded and where it was stored so that when I returned it, she would not notice that it had been borrowed.

My sister was not so neat and organized and when I borrowed something from Sis, I was not too concerned where I placed it on its return… as long as it was in the ballpark. And I believe that strategy worked and she never noticed because when I came out to her years later, she had no clue that I had borrowed her stuff.

Mom was a different story. Even though I was very careful, I guess left enough clues that she figured me out. Not sure where I fouled up. Perhaps I did not return a bra to its exact location. I dunno, but years later after I had moved out, I mentioned I was going to a Halloween party crossdressed and she asked me if I had taken my box of girly stuff that I had hidden (unsuccessfully) in my bedroom!

You can't fool mothers.

  1. The mother wear / sister wear AI scene could be the basis of a screenplay. Have you ever contemplated writing a screenplay or stage script.?

  2. Dear Stana,

So "Home Alone" a Casa Stana Production featuring boys of all ages being alone at home with nothing to do but dress up in mom's or sisters clothes.

I realised at the age of 10, that boys could become girls (Roberta Cowell) but never had much interest in little girls' clothes? BUT, this being in the early 50's was very interested in my mother's clothes. These were the days when everybody, well you know who I mean, wore proper foundation garments and stockings. Of course she knew, but I wasn't punishes nor helped.

As I grew up, the girls in my life started to wear bras, stockings and garter belts and some, if they had old fashioned moms, girdles; so desirable.

Now I wear clothes appropriate to an elderly lady, but there are a couple of pretty garter belts and a packet or two of stockings in the lingerie drawer, but usually, like all women of my age, tights are the norm..........but I still always (well nearly) wear a panty girdle.

And I really want to see the various age versions of Casa Stana's Home Alone, and hope that there may even be episodes going back in time.

    Happy New Year.

    Lily.

  3. Godbless Mother's! Yeah, they know. I myself was careful borrowing my mother's clothes and I liked the matronly look. But I made some mistakes in hiding a skirt in a bag in my closet. One day I went to look for it, and it was gone from the bag. Yikes. That happened a second time in another hiding location. Mother never confronted me on it though. lol.

I love those white blouses from 'Allo 'Allo' show. I wish those types of ornate white blouses were more common. So feminine in their details. My favorite types of blouses.

  4. As a child of the 1950's I had no sisters or female cousins. My mother's vision of a perfect family was husband, wife, older son and a younger daughter. My father's sperm did not accommodate her vision and I ended up being a younger son. I had no interest in girls. I was all boy involved in street sports, playing cowboys and Indians, war, pushing cars in the dirt, and too many visits to the principal's office. Puberty settled in and things changed. It was a difficult times, trying to reconcile a lust for Annette Funicello, unobtainable girls and a desire to wear my mother's clothing. Yes, I carefully replaced her undergarments in her dresser drawers. What I did not anticipate is snapping a bra strap on my mother's sole black bra. Yikes! I was not confronted, but my parents did their best to catch me in the act. They never did, but they knew. It was perilous times.

  5. Two Allo Allo references! Just where are they going to hide the two British airmen and that knockwurst with the forged painting of the fallen Madonna inside?

  6. I enjoyed dressing as a kid wearing my mom’s things. I was always very careful but I am certain she knew what I was doing. We always leave clues. There is no perfect crime. I have come out to my sister. Never had the courage to tell my mom but I think she knows. She once mentioned dressing me up as a Girl Scout for Halloween as a cherished memory.

  7. Best case scenario is to have a mom and a sister. Mom has the foundation garments and sis has the stylish stuff. By my time though, foundation garments were a thing of the past, so mom did not have much of anything of use for me. Just maybe a belt or shirt or something.

  9. The only item of my mother's clothing that I specifically recall wearing was her pantyhose. I envied the outfits of my female classmates and found mom's clothes to be too "old lady" to risk wearing. Even still, I'm sure she knew I had been poking around in her dresser but she never said anything.
