That was me!
I believed that at 6 feet 2, I was too tall to pass and every civilian I encountered would know my birth gender. That “belief” kept me closeted for a long time and I only went out en femme to support group meetings or events run by my support group.
My support group’s external events helped, but it was cisgender women like the lady above who really helped to ease me out go the closet. I don’t recall being called “gorgeous,” but I did hear enough encouragement and compliments from females (friends, acquaintances and strangers alike) who convinced me to mix it up with civilians.
And so it goes.

Being too tall was always a concern of mine thinking that I never could get out and about, but it never seemed to be a problem confidence style department. I was amazed at how easy it all was once I broke through that mental barrier. Paula G
ReplyDeleteI think we all have "something" that makes us self conscious, I am not as tall as you, but at 5 10 I am above average, but it is my shoulders that make me sensitive, yet it is never an issue for anyone else. There are tall girls, and heavy girls, and girls with broad shoulders! (and by the way I do miss reading Meg's blog!)
ReplyDeleteHi Stana, I've never thought being tall makes it impossible to pass. Being tall will certainly be noticed, but you have never looked anything but an attractive woman in any picture you have posted. I've a cousin who is somewhere between 6'2" and 6'4", and she wears heels to formal occasions with flair! She is the tallest in the family by far, but even if Norah made an appearance, I'd still be one of the shortest girls.

Oh, I just noticed Meg is today's "Femulator". What a great photo and you make such a fetching bride! It must truly have been a day to remember, and thanks for sharing with all of us dear.

So nice to see a picture of Meg. I always loved her blog. I hope she’s doing well.
ReplyDeleteI am another lady who is afflicted with tallness. At six foot one and add three inch heels my 200 pound hulk is the exception when it comes to women in the wild. It was great when I was young. There is truth to the belief tall men get preference over short men. When people watching I have noticed tall women do get a second glance, especially if they are in a group. When a visiting women's college basketball team visits the local mall, they get more than a second look. If one seeks to escape the stresses of the male world it seems counter-intuitive to appear as a tall women and potentially attract unwanted attention.
