Little Boy Blue

Gender confusion arrived early in my life.

I had my own bedroom from the get-go. Eighteen months after my birth, my sister came along and we became roommates.

I am not sure when my parents wall-papered our bedroom because I only remember it having wallpaper depicting various nursery rhyme superstars.

One superstar confused me: Little Boy Blues was wearing girls’ shoes... Mary Janes to be specific. I suppose that at one time, little boys wore Mary Jane style shoes, but not in my lifetime and the wallpaper’s take on Boy Blue did not make sense to me. Why was he wearing girls’ shoes?

Weirdly (or maybe not so weirdly), when I asked AI to generate an image for the blog of “nursery rhyme Little Boy Blue wearing Mary Jane shoes,” it created the accompanying image with Little Boy Blue wearing a dress in addition to the Mary Janes!

  1. I absolutely wore Mary Janes when I was little (and they were blue!). Before they invented toddler shoes that didn’t fall off, they had Mary Janes. I thought they were common, you can see them frequently in old photographs, but perhaps not so much in North America. This won’t rest, I have to go and find a photo of me in my shoes! And naturally, I still wear MJs only now they have a 3” heel.

  2. In the past all children wore dresses so Little Boy Blue here seems fine to me. I think some traditions should be revived, don't you? Sue x

  3. Little Boy Blue is friends with Little Girl Pink and Little N.B. White. Together they form the Little Trans Pride group and they have their own flag. 😁

  4. Sort of makes sense to me that AI would have that boy in a dress since AI us suppose to learn from scouring the Internet and learn by other's postings. AI is "learning!"
