I am so old that when I was just starting to get my feet wet in heels, a “perfect size 12” was a goal for many woman. Today, I don’t know what size stylish women hope to achieve, but it sure isn't size 12. Today’s size 12 is larger than size 12 of yesteryear. (I even managed to fit into some of today's size 12 dresses!)
Ordering on-line sometimes is definitely a crap shoot. I think high heels are the worst to get a proper fit with the size of the toe box for different styles varying so much. At least with men's pants there cannot be much variance with the waist size being numerical.
I stay away from high heels with pointed toes so the variability of the toe box is minimized. Another can of worms as far as sizing are bras. I stick to one brand and style so, again, I get a consistent fit. My go to brand is Vanity Fair underwire with a size of 40 DD, and I don't use a filler such as breast forms.
You know how 60 is the new 40? Well, 8 is the new 12. Vanity sizing, the bane of mail order fits....

Verna looks far better with dark or globe hair. The red doesn’t suit her.
