Friday evening, September 8, I am relaxing in my comfy recliner after getting the house in shape for my wife’s return home on Monday. A thunderstorm is in full force outdoors.
Living on the highest point in the county, we are accustomed to strong storms, but this one is particularly ferocious and suddenly, a lightning strike hits very nearby. A second later, there is a flash inside the house.
The flash was the wall wart of one of our television’s blowing up taking that television with it. We also lost our landline, internet and cable television. A modem and the cable boxes were dead. The lightning also took out our garage door opener and our furnace/air conditioning unit. That is all! (That’s enough!)
On Tuesday, Comcast fixed the landline, internet and cable television outage for “free” and my garage door guy replaced the garage door opener not for free. Bought and received a replacement television from Amazon. Waiting on our HVAC guy to submit a proposal to our insurance company to replace the furnace/air conditioning unit.
And so it goes!!!

Yow! Sorry to hear it!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about all these troubles. Wishing you and your wife altogether a better autumn ahead. Sue x
ReplyDeleteCall you homeowners insurance check what’s covered Paula G
ReplyDeleteInsurance was one of my first calls and they are on the case.
DeleteDoes your home have a lightning rod on it? My grandparents home in upstate New York has one and it has been hit more than once and the rod works at redirecting the bolt into the ground.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, our previous home had lightning rods and we still got hit!
DeleteThe purpose is to direct the lightning bolt into the ground and not blow the house apart.
DeleteSorry to hear about what you encountered. I live in New England too and the amount of electrical activity in the weather has been absolutely amazing this year. Scary! Hope you recover quickly from it all!
ReplyDeleteOn a positive note, love that the girl in the Someday Funnies pic is wearing stirrup pants! Always one of my faves. Love the gold shoes too!

That's a bummer for sure Stana. I would suggest investing having a surge protection breaker installed in your electrical panel. These devices act as a sacrificial breaker to protect all of the things that you mentioned from being fried.
ReplyDeleteThat Anne Klein dress has the biggest houndstooth pattern I've ever seen! Did you snag one of these dresses, Stana?
ReplyDeleteI was tempted, but look in my closet and remember that I have an over abundance of houndstooth!
DeleteStorms have been awful across the country this year, I had some water in my basement from torrential rain, and Stana was attacked by lightning bolts! I love the technology suggestions offered here. It would appear Ben Franklin's ancient technology would probably have prevailed. Let's all consider older solutions before replacing them with new technology! "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"! I'm in a row house, so a neighborhood lightning rod might be a solution, though there are plenty of higher targets around me. I have surge protectors for all my key electronics. though maybe I should have followed Melissa's suggestion.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping none of the zapped items get in the way of your wife's happy return!

Regarding "older solutions," our previous home had lightning rods and we still got hit!
DeleteWell you get a newer and bigger TV out of it and a new furnace but it could of wiped out the shack too. Hugs Brenda
ReplyDeleteI always disconnect the antennas and AC whenever a storm is in the forecast, so no loss in the ham shack!
