Wear a dress!

March 6, next Monday, is National Dress Day when
we celebrate the most versatile and fun article of clothing there is — the dress!

Fashion designer Ashley Lauren founded the day to help pay homage to dresses and the magical moments that happen when we wear them. “I remember the dresses I wore to my prom, first job interview, first date, competing in a pageant, my first red carpet event, the list goes on.”  (In our case, remembering the first dress we wore or the dress we wore the first time we were out among the civilians.)

“This is a fun day to cherish and celebrate those memories.”

The simplest way to celebrate National Dress Day is to wear a dress! Because the day falls during March, it may be cold where you live and maybe you’ve been wearing pants for months. Use the day as an excuse to get out your favorite dress — no matter how springy — put on some leggings or tights and make new memories in your favorite garment.

I hope you will wear a dress next Monday and if you do, take a selfie, send it to me and I will post it here to celebrate National Dress Day online.

By the way, next Wednesday is International Women’s Day, so if you can’t wear a dress on Monday, wear one on Wednesday (when I will be wearing my birthday dress).

Even better, wear a dress on Monday and Wednesday!

I plan to wear a dress on those days. But it is too early to wear heels. Everything I’ve read says that you have to wait three months after knee replacement surgery before you can wear high heels. I guess I could pose for a few selfies in heels, but I won’t be hoofing anywhere in stilettos for awhile.

My recovery from surgery progresses. I no longer need a cane to get around, however, for my own sense of security, I use a cane when I am going down stairs (although I have navigated the stairs a few times when I forgot my cane).

I had my first rehab session on Friday and the therapist says I am recovering fast, so it won’t be long (yeah) before I will be able to go out en femme again.

  5. My first dress

It was a sunny Saturday morning and the house was empty, my parents were probably off to work, I was on my own until after lunch. I distinctly remember going with premeditated purpose into my sister’s room to try on a dress, stockings and boots just like the girls in my class. I had never done this before. I can vaguely remember a need to do this, a powerful draw to do this, it seemed instinctive. I was 9 years old an innocent child, this wasn’t a fetish or sexual turn on.
I remember putting on the panties and stockings, then the dress falling down over my head and then the boots. So this is what it feels like, I remember thinking. I saw myself in the full length mirror and became utterly astounded. I looked like a girl, this was wonderful. Now I could be just like them.

  6. Best wishes for a full recovery from your knee replacement surgery!
I did not know about National Dress Day online - it sounds like fun!
I will, of course, wanting to be in full solidarity on International Women's Day.
Wearing a dress on both Monday and Wednesday sounds delightful - I should probably out myself more often and more completely than I already have.

  7. Speaking of dresses, I was in a local retailer that is big in my home state for work this morning, and their spring line of dresses made me melt. It was interesting to note how many cute dresses there are in the junior section that remind me of the photo that's posted on this blog today. The spring dresses seem to be so feminine, cute and flirty, and it makes me wish I could be younger and born in the correct sex. Life would be so much easier that way. I wear dresses every chance I get so, in some ways, every day is Dress Day for girls like us!

Stana, I'm happy your recovery & PT are going well. I know you love your heels, but I copy the genetic women of my own age and wear flats nearly all the time.

I've badly turned by ankle and torn my anterior talofibular ligament a couple of times over the years. As a runner, I'm afraid that at my age, the next tear will put an end to my running, so flats it shall be.

  9. Stana I’m glad you’re recovery has gone well. You rock girl!

I remember my first dress! Growing up I was very close to my first cousin. She and I were close and I often stayed at her house. One day, along with her other sister, they asked me if I’d like come to their tea party. We’d done that before, but this time they said I had to come as a girl.

Part of me wanted to do it and part of me was afraid, but the girl’s prevailed and soon I was in one of my older cousin’s old Easter dresses. It had puffy white sleeves, a layered full skirt, and I wore a petticoat underneath. When my aunt saw me she smiled and didn’t tease me. I was so relieved.

I only crossdressed with my cousin one other time. In college she helped dress up as a girl one Halloween. I wore one of her miniskirts, blouse, and pantyhose. At least that time my hair was long enough to fix up like a girl’s.

    What fun memories.

  10. Oh I like dresses - but alas - on this special day it will not be possible to wear one because we are on ski-hollidays and I am "only" a part-time-lady.

  11. I note Stana doesn't really seem to count it as en femme if she cannot wear heels... right now she could go in a dress and flats...

    1. Not true. I have gone out en femme many times wearing flats not to mention women's slacks.

  12. I can remember all the times I’ve worn a dress because I have not done it often over the past 30+ years. When I was ten my mom wanted me to go for Halloween wearing the white flowergirl dress & gloves from her own wedding that my cousin had worn. She dolled me up with a wig & stockings but I was too shy to go thorough with it though I hid from her how much I was thrilled by it. I later secretly tried on some of her other dresses she kept in a closet in my room. I’ll never know if she was dropping a hint & knew that I sometimes crossdressed or if it was only because her main closet had no room. Later when I was on my own was only time I wore a dress in public: it was in a community theatre. I played a robber who wears a knee length, sleeveless pink & brown dress, faux pearl necklace, a soft broadrimmed hat, dangly earrings and high heels as a disguise. The director had picked everything out for me except the high heels which I tried out at a store & bought myself and she returned the dress to the store & I gave away the shoes. That shoe trip is the only time I’ve had the nerve to shop for, try on or buy anything womenswear-related in a store. So I won’t wear a dress for Dress Day or Intl Women’s Day this year as I own nothing & would never raid my wife’s wardrobe. But I would put on a show of “reluctantly” agreeing to a wear a dress if asked by friends or family for womanless fundraiser event, another play, or just for fun as long as my wife knew and was ok with it.
