Starting Over Again

I am scheduled to have knee replacement surgery on January 30. At the present time, my bad knee is swollen and arthritic. When I walk, it is not pretty. Getting up from a seat is difficult and climbing down stairs is challenging. The surgery can’t come too soon.

I have relatives who had the surgery and listening to their experiences, I concluded that maybe I will approach normality in six months. So it will be awhile before I will be sashaying around town in high heels (or even kitten heels).

We are a one-car family and I worry how this all will affect my ability to drive my Subaru with its manual transmission (as luck would have it, my bad knee happens to be on my clutch leg).

Recovery will probably affect the daily schedule of this blog, too. I’m not too concerned about missing a few daily posts, but I just want to forewarn you readers so that you will not worry when I am a no-show.

On the other hand, I hope that after I heal, it will be a new beginning for me. That I will be able to get out more. Do more outreach. Volunteer. And just enjoy my life as a woman.

The New Beginnings image above was originally an email fashion ad from Joie that screamed to be Photoshopped (face swapped) as you see above.

  1. Follow your surgeons instructions even if it hurts! Aqua work is a must, the boss has had both knees done, being an ex nurse she was a good patient, but was appalled by some others that had their ops at the same time as hers and wouldn’t follow instructions because it hurt which resulted in a less satisfactory outcome. Best of luck! :)

  2. Best of wishes, and we will hope for the quickest possible recovery. i would not be surprised to see you walking well long before six months, though I am not sure you will be in heels much sooner... the other women I know who had it didn't wear heels much. One thing you will be grateful for, is having lost that weight. Less stress on the joints.

  8. Good luck on your recovery. My wife had one knee replaced several years ago, and it appears she is headed to have the other replaced this year. Follow the doctor's orders and do your physical therapy.

  10. Good Luck and a speedy recovery! Knee surgery is far less of a "big deal" than it used to be, I know several friends who have made rapid and full recoveries ~ as Anonymous says, follow the instructions and you'll be back to normal in no time.

  11. 1,000 % agree about sticking with physical therapy..6 months or whatever it takes! Well worth it in the long run. I'm confident if it's a choice of PT or a post, we all agree, choose the PT!! One day at a time will get you there.

  13. good wishes on the surgery I am sure it will go well My wife has had 2 done she is 9 months out from the 2nd and doing well. I suspect she could still ski fine with the new knew and she is not much of a high heeled girl, she leaves that to me. You'll probably be doing more blogs as you recover maybe miss a day or 2 and I'll miss my morning read. Recover quick and do your PT.

  15. All best wishes for the knee from this corner. As others have said, recovery takes much less time than it did in the past, and the PT is critical. When my wife had her knee replaced, she was encouraged to be up and about with a walker the day after surgery. You’ll be out and about with heels sooner than you think!

  18. Good luck on the op and as others have said: do the exercises. They seem really important to building your muscle strength back up and flexing the implant too.
