When I see this photo from the 70's I am reminded of it being my 'hay day' in femulating. I still like the makeup of the late 60s and early 70s and I would give anything for another pair of go go boots! However, I must admit it was not that easy going 'out and about' in public back then. I vividly recall having the crap kicked out of me by a Chicago cop when he discovered I was a guy when I was participating in the riots at the 68 Democratic convention (but then that's a story for another time)
That sounds familiar, Paulette. In DC in the 1950s, '60s and '70s I saw police beating gays, crossdressers and drag queens on a regular basis. I also saw them stand by while other people would do the same thing. It wasn't until DC finally had a mayor and local government control that this despicable practice ended -- and that wasn't until the late 1970s!
I was really closeted throughout this timeframe. I got my "crossdressing urges" just barely covered by being a drag show junkie! The "Eisenhauer stigma" was still around and in addition to being beaten up one could lose their job and be "marked", which made it hard to get another job. But I remember so well going to high school and college between 1956 and 1963 and being "surrounded" by girls with big hair and bullet bra boobs. Wow! And, of course, all the drag queens followed their fashion leads! The wigs at the 82 Club were so big and plentiful that they must have had to rent another space just to house them. Ha! I loved every second of that time!!
