Be a Normal Man

“Be a Normal Man” is the subject of a spam e-mail I received yesterday. So, following the advice of that e-mail, I went to Home Depot to do some shopping like a “normal man.”

To my astonishment, there were more women shopping at Home Depot than men. The majority of the Home Depot “associates” were women, too.

I felt a little out of place just like when I go shopping for girly things in a girly store while dressed in boy mode. It felt like every woman in Home Depot was watching me to see what girly product I would fondle. I could read their minds, “What is HE going to do with that Torx screwdriver?”

I was so paranoid that I used the automated self-check-out instead of going to a cashier (who were all women) to avoid the smirks and knowing looks that I was bound to receive while making my girly purchase.

Next time I shop at Home Depot, I will be sure to wear a dress, wig, makeup and heels so I won’t feel out of place.

Cute story, but in keeping with that tongue-in-cheek vein, what on earth makes you think that shopping at Home Depot in a skirt, dress, and heels will enable you to fly under the radar and blend in with all those other female shoppers and sales associates? Think more in terms of the standard female uniform these days consisting of jeans or yoga pants, baggy sweatshirts, sneakers or flip-flops (or clunky work boots in the case of the sales associates), and all of that fashionably accessorized with a cross-body bag, a ball cap, and hair done up in a messy bun. Makes one wonder who is the REAL crossdresser under that scenario...

  2. I love how some toss around the word "normal" to make it mean whatever they want it to mean. I once heard that the definition of Perfect is "suited to fit the need/sitution". Which means if that clunker car gets you to and from where you need to go, it is "perfect". "Normal" is SO situational.

  3. Had to admit this but I am the jeans and t- shirt type. Sneakers in the winter and flip flops in summer. Very little make up, put my hair up in a high ponytail and out the door I go. And yes I sometimes even wear my ball cap with my ponytail through the back of it. I’m thin with small features, feet, hands,face,head..but I have had gynecomastia since puberty and has enhanced now that I’m in my 60s. So the girls lead the way. I love fashion. Sometimes I will dress up but not very often. But I sure do love all of you that do!
