Peter Scolari, who played Hildegarde on the crossdressing television series Bosom Buddies, died yesterday from cancer. He was only 66 years old!

In her Friday post, Rhonda (of Rhonda's Escape fame) cited an article that explains how the Femulation Nation’s national anthem, Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” was inspired by crossdressers.

i gather "bosom buddies" was quite popular in the states when broadcast, but i don't think it even got shown on british television (i am pretty sure i would have picked up on that if it had, given the subject matter). so going from the photos i have seen of the above pair in drag on the internet, i can only assume that other characters in the show were not fooled by them (especially hanks) unless they were blind or utterly naive? i realise i can probably watch some of it on youtube now, but to be honest the stills have put me off from doing so!
ReplyDeleteBosom Buddies was a breath of fresh air for a transgender girl who didn't have the resources we have now nor the acceptance that should have always been part of proper social etiquette. Not only was that show a riot, but both leads went on to have wonderful acting careers. Peter was always outstanding in every role he played and will truly be missed.
ReplyDeleteI was very sad to hear Peter Scolari died and at such a young age. "Bosom Buddies" was 'must see TV' for me in the early 80's. He and Tom Hanks had excellent comedic timing. Too bad the show only lasted two seasons. Peter Scolari was very good later in "Newhart" and everything else I saw him in.
