Ouch!

Monday, I took my wife to the doctor for her regular check-up. On the way home, we stopped at Rite Aid to pick up a drug that the doctor had prescribed. While we were there, I suggested that it would be an ideal time to get our annual flu vaccine and while we’re at it, might as well get the pneumonia and shingles vaccines, too.

By the time we returned home after the vaccinations, we both felt exhausted and our shingle vaccinated upper arms were swollen. I looked it up and this is normal, but we both felt lousy, did not sleep well and are still recovering one day later!

(The Johnson & Johnson coronavirus booster shot is not yet available, otherwise we would have opted for four shots, not three.)

Whereas the flu and pneumonia shots were free, the shingles vaccine is considered a prescription and falls under however your insurance handles prescriptions. In our case, it was $45 out of pocket for each shingles shot. Ouch!

UPDATE: I was out of my head when I put this post together yesterday and grabbed the wrong photo for the Femulator slot, so thank you all for pointing out the error of my ways. Today, I feel better (but not normal yet) after a crushing defeat of the Yankees by my boys in Boston and a good night’s sleep!

    1. agreed. i think the nearest marc warren got to femulating was when he played the new romantic figurehead steve strange in the boy george bio-drama "worried about the boy". given he was more than twice the age strange was when he played the part, he was very good. btw, i suspect readers here will be very interested in seeing freddie fox playing george's chum marilyn:

    3. Warren did femulate in that TV movie. I mistakenly used the wrong photo. A correct photo is in the Femulator slot now.

  4. Glad you've had these jabs.I've have the same inoculations, I think essential for we "girls" of a certain age, especially the shingles one. I was shocked to learn that the shingles pain can persist for the rest of one's life.

Of course here in the U.K., all vaccination are free!

    1. I had shingles earlier this year. So far, I have not had any reoccurring pain (knock on wood).

  5. If it was available, you might have had to wait. I don't know what the booster rules are but I had to postpone my (second) shingles shot because they said no other vaccines within a month (I think it was) of the covid vax.

  6. The shingles vaccine is well worth the cost !
( Although , sadly , it does come with the consequence of a quite sore arm for a few days - at least, it did for us . )

  7. Too many shots at the same time! I tried that three years ago: flu, pneumonia, and shingles at the same time. I felt sick for a few days. My wife, a registered nurse and former chief shot lady for our state, (children would cringe and whimper when the saw her at the local shopping mall), scolded me for too many shots at once. When I replied that I did that and more when I was in the Army, she gave me that look that shouted, “You are 62 now, not 22!”

  8. I got my shingles vaccines this year (2 shots 4 months apart). The pharmacist warned me it hurt more than the Covid vaccine. I laughed it off and told her to fire away. She wasn't joking! It hurt going in and my arm hurt for another 4 days. I had no trouble sleeping because it sent me straight to nap land.

    1. I hardly felt the flu and pneumonia shots, but the shingles shot was memorable in a bad way! My upper arm is still swollen two days later.

  9. CONGRATULATIONS
to you and your bride being two of the many people who have evolved into the 21st century.
Wife and I are fully vaccinated, as we are of the same, reasoned class of persons who embrace medical technology.
If the average COVID DENIER would look into their own medical history they would realize HOW MANY TIMES medical technology has saved and therefore lengthened their lives.
Just the simple, cheap administration of antibiotics has probably saved the lives of every single reader of this blog-- at least once. Probably dozens of times times.
I am age 68; and medical technology has 'saved my bacon' a great many times. NO BEADS AND RATTLES or MACHO POSTURING for this person.

  11. I've seen a friend with shingles -- nobody should have that happen to them! I've had both versions of the Shingles vaccination, and both left my arm in some pain, especially the second one. It seems your insurance and mine work the same way. My max co-pay for medication is $35, which is the way I was charged for the shot. I think it's not free because it isn't a universal need. Not everyone had chicken pox when they were kids. No so in Hyattsville, MD in the early 1950's! My mother told me that every one of the kids in Ager Road Elementary School had chicken pox and they closed the school for 2-3 days!

  12. The Flu jab is worthwhile

    2. I've been getting flu shots ever since they were available. But a few years ago I still ended up with a flu/bronchitis and was helping to keep the Z-Pack manufacturer in business. But then the high-dose flu shots for seniors showed up and since they arrived I haven't had as much a a sniffle! So, any of you ladies who also qualify as seniors, be sure to ask for the high-dose flu shot. You'll be glad you did! I got mine yesterday!

  13. Please be careful getting multiple Vaccinations at a single Time, there is very little information on the effects in humans of such actions.
I read a study, gotten on interlibrary loan from the National War College, translated into English of many studies brought out of the Soviet Union buy a detector; the number two person (MD) who ran the Soviet Biological Warfare Program spread over 128 installations. They required jabs for over 100 vaccines for each year for the Scientists, Doctors, techs and garrison troops. The outcomes for many were not good. That is the largest known study for multiple injections.
To this day the Doctor still has multiple medical problems.
Be Safe and do them separately, Please 🥺.
