Heels and Nails

Slinging It Dept.

While attending high school and college, I worked summers and occasional weekends at a printing company whose biggest customers at the time were Marvel Comics and Sears.

One time, I worked 12 hours (8 regular and 4 overtime) stacking Sears newspaper inserts onto skids after they came off the printing press. The cover of that particular Sears insert featured a woman’s shoe – a black patent slingback high heel pump.

For 12 hours, tens of thousands of Sears inserts passed through my hands. More specifically, tens of thousands of black slingback pump images passed through my hands! And that image was seared in my brain.

I always loved high heels, but after that 12-hour shift 50 years ago, I gained a special affinity for black patent slingback high heel pumps.

I've owned a few pairs over the years, but count none in my wardrobe these days. However, I corrected that omission over the weekend and ordered a pair that were on sale (30% off) at Nine West.

Nailing It Dept.

Jenn, my ham radio sister, alerted me to an article from Glamour, “The 11 Best Press-On Nails for Every Nail Shape and Style,” and I am passing it on to you.

I am a big fan of press-on nails (that’s all I wear) and over the years, I have received a lot of compliments regarding them. (My nail admirers often believe that I had my nails done at a salon and are surprised when I reveal truth.) So I highly recommend press-ons.

Caveat Emptor: I have lady fingers, so press-on nails fit me fine. However, if you have manly mitts, press-on nails may not be large enough for you.

  1. I have been using imPRESS nails for ever (well, 10 or 12 years). In all that time I had 1 fall off (in the dressing room trying on skirts). But in each box of 25 or so, there are usually only 2 that fit my thumbs. I have tried to find a nail polish in the same color, painting my thumbs and wearing the press ons on all the other fingers.

    Stana,
I wear press on nails as well and like you, get lots of compliments about them. I buy in bulk and paint them myself. I apply them with adhesive nail tabs. The best thing about press-on nails is that I can quickly change colors to match or complement my wardrobe.

  3. Trick from my sister who also has large hands and given birth four times ;) Falsies on the fingers polish on the thumbs in a very different colour. She really goes to town on them and always gets good comments. We both have weak finger nails but the thumbs are OK so a win/win really.

  4. Stana, you hit two home runs today

The Black Patent Sling Back is probably one of the sexiest shoes one can wear. For vintage hosiery wearers it shows the heel pattern quite well.

Press On nails was one of the biggest tricks I learned when having a proper makeover done. I love the Revlon french nails and I have tried the others in a nice red. I have even found adhesive tape pads.

They cost a bit for a days use for out and about but they really complete the look making them worthwhile.

Its not until I have them on do I really feel complete to go through the door and venture out in the world.

  6. Would YOU match those GLOVES to that DRESS? NOT ME! Go with bright white (not off white) or a light pastel yellow. I am amazed this is a published ad...
NOT the 'playtex plastic rubber glove' yellow color! Unless you are into that latex thing.... not... ;-)

    1. What happened Stana?
I just realized the posted photos of the 'lady in yellow' on the standard web page and mobile version is NOT THE SAME!
The lady on the mobile version of the post is wearing the yellow plaid dress with the non-matching 'Playtex yellow rubber gloves'...

    2. The webpage image and the mobile image are the same. I set up each post on a webpage template and Blogger renders the webpage post for the mobile display. There is no way I could use a different image on the mobile version of the post - I can only make changes with the webpage template and those changes will appear on both versions. Perhaps, the display settings of your computer and smartphone are causing the color variation you see. I compared my laptop and iPhone display of the image, and the laptop display renders the image darker than does the iPhone.
