Summer of 1969, I worked in the receiving department of Caldor where I unpacked and sorted women's clothing all day long.
One day, a co-worker, who must have sensed my feminine vibe, suggested that it must be my dream job because I got first shot at all the new dresses and lingerie before it went on the floor for sale to the public. He even showed me a private backroom where I could try on the clothing that I might like to purchase.
To defend my 18-year-old masculinity, I denied any interest in what he suggested.

So the obvious question: did you try them on?
ReplyDeleteOn the rare time I spot vintage pantyhose/stockings in my size, I grab em. If you've ever been in a vintage store, you know women back then were much smaller.
My wife had bought them for herself, but she no longer wears pantyhose (or skirts or dresses), so she let me have at ‘em. I tried them on and as expected, they were too small.

Just curious - were the pantyhose still in the packages? Have you tried them on? Are they still in good condition? Sorry, just trying my hand at being a Fashion Archaeologist! (giggle)

ReplyDeleteI worked in retail in my college years. I often had fantasies of hiding in the store after hours, and 'trying on merch from the ladies section....'
ReplyDeleteI soon realized that the security system also had sound detection apparatus which was quite sensitive. Later some of us would set alarms on the clock radios to just to prank the night watchman.
So, not only was there not a plan A, there was not a plan B...
On a related note, there was an arrest for shoplifting at this store. They detained and arrested a male police officer for attempting to snitch panties!

Actually, I was so overwhelmed by the amount of clothing I had to process that I did not have time to peruse the merchandise. It was just another job.
