“Besides the fact that old makeup doesn't hold up too well, if you're not careful, it can even be harmful to your skin and cause irritation.”
Here is a summary of when you should discard makeup after opening it. For further reading, I refer you to this Insider article.
Blush – 2 years
Eyeshadow – 2 years
Foundation and Primer (products for the face) – 2 years
Lipstick – 1 year
Liquid Eyeliner – 3 months
Mascara – 3 months
Pencil Eyeliner – 1 year
By the way, this symbol appears on makeup labels to indicate how long the product will last after you've opened it, in this case, 24 months.
Keep being pretty!

Thanks so much for the reminder Stana. I really do need to go through my "stuff" and throw out the old. I'm quite conscientious about my mascara, but I forget about the rest of my makeup. Your reminder is helping to keep me diligent and safe.

Great advice, Sweetie. As an actor, I usually go through my Stage Make Up kit on a fairly regular basis, but with all this stuff going on I haven't been using ANY make up on a regular basis. I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder, Stana. I'm going to be 79 in August. My parents grew up during the Great Depression. One of the strategies for saving money was "stocking up" when there were good sales. My siblings and I were either DNA-coded or trained so well that "stocking up" became a conditioned response. I get EMails from a myriad of cosmetic companies who are always having aggressive sales. And I fall prey to my conditioned responses. Hopefully this reminder can be a wake up call for me and I can root through what will probably turn out to be a tsunami of expired cosmetics! Now, if I can combine this with NOT stocking up!
ReplyDeleteIf you find a deal on your fav lipstick, place the tubes in the freezer. The cold will keep the oils from going rancid. This would probably help extend shelf life for everything but water based makeup compounds.
ReplyDeleteWe also store various pharmaceuticals in the 'fridge or freezer to maintain stability. Our ophthalmologist likes this approach!
