Over the years, I lost count how many times I have been summoned for jury duty. About 20 years ago, I actually was a juror in a civil case, but usually I just show up and hang out in the jury room with the other potential jurors waiting to be sent home when it is determined that the court no longer needs jurors that day.
Except for the potential boredom from hanging out in the jury room all day long, I don't mind jury duty. But just in case, I decided to spice things up this time and appear for jury duty presenting as a woman.
I checked the jury service guide that the court sent along with my summons and the only mention of clothing is "Use discretion in selecting your attire. Decorum is maintained in the courthouse; please dress accordingly."
I believe I can maintain decorum in my pink silk blouse, black pencil skirt and high heel pumps.

ReplyDeleteAs one of my blog's readers noted to me - there is no requirement in NY (CT may differ on this) that we present ourselves according to traditional gender norms when going to Jury Duty. So when I was called for SDNY Grand Jury, I was presenting as female while carrying my male ID. Not a problem. I was glad not to be called, as the jury convened in Lower Manhattan (near the Brooklyn Bridge) and would be empaneled for 18-24 months. (Could you imagine if this was the grand jury investigating Michael Cohen and his "unnamed and unindicted" presidential candidate? I'd have hated to chafe under the inability to talk about the case!)
Hopefully, you'll get to serve on a quick trial while presenting as Stana!

That's the spirit, Stana, go be your true self. You might get dismissed earlier from the jury room, or as Marian said, maybe you'll be seated on a jury as Stana.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the Femulator and her dress!
Let's hope the trial is a long one so you can present as Stana for as long as possible. I think you are right to dress at the court,I wish I could be as up front as you. When I receive a jury duty letter, I throw it in the bin!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds great! Here is a link to the state law that protects you should anyone try to hassle you:

This means, for instance, you can use the ladies' room and no one can say boo.
Anyway, I am so excited for you! Please tell us all about it.
Marian
ReplyDeleteIf you had been selected for the Michael Cohen case would you have had to spend every day in female mode for 18-24 months?

Grand juries generally do not meet daily. They only meet when the government has evidence to present. They also do not work on just one case during their lifetime. I don't know if they take on more than one case at a time - I doubt it but I don't know for sure.
DeleteOh, please post a pic of you in your court outfit if you can. Thanks!
