Gamulating

Fashions come and go and then they come back again. If you are old enough (like me), you have witnessed it yourself.

My mother taught me to wear hosiery (stockings or pantyhose) whenever I go out, so that's what I have done all my feminine life.

I have nice legs, but they are not perfect and hosiery hides some of the flaws. Hosiery also helps keep my legs warm when the weather does not, so I have never considered going without knee-highs, thigh-highs or pantyhose.

But as I went along on my merry way, I did not realize that younger women were abandoning hosiery and going out with their legs bared. I guess if you got it, flaunt it, but until I read somewhere that pantyhose sales were plummeting, I had no idea.

But pantyhose may be making a comeback, thanks to Princess Kate. The Princess has legs to die for and she wears hosiery most of the time, so some women have taken notice of that fashion fact and are gamulating Kate.

Fashion writer Alison Syrett is one of those women and she wrote about her experiences for Good Housekeeping in an interesting article titled "I Tried the Secret Behind Kate Middleton's Flawless Legs."

The article confirmed my feelings about wearing hosiery, but if you are unsure about baring or adorning your legs, I recommend reading this fun article.

  1. Stana I personally can't stand the feel and discomfort of panyhose so avoid it like the plague most particularly in the summer months. As the weather gets colder I switch to pants. Most younger wimen here in Montreal do not wear them either. But then you gotta be you!!

  2. Stana, A comment from the legs point of view. Women who work on their feet should wear some sort of support hose. How many time do we hear women comment on how tired their legs are after working 6 to 12 hours on their feet. Support hose seem to go a long way to minimize or even preventing varicose and bulging veins. I have worked on my feet for fifty years and so glad I have worn support stockings.

  3. I cannot fathom being dressed without pantyhose or stockings. We come from the same generation and our mothers would never consider going out in a dress without hose.
Last year we went to a summer wedding on the beach. My wife, the mother of the bride and mother of the groom as well as most of the ladies of our generation wore hose. In my way of thinking it is the proper womanly way to go.
I hope that hose makes a comeback and if it does I will gladly share the credit with Princess Kate.

  5. If I was 20, 5'10" with legs up to there, and with a golden tan, I would go bare.

    I'm not.

    Hose, if the legs show.

Agreed! To paraphrase a lyric from ANNIE - "You're never fully dressed without some hose"! I refuse to go out without them, partly because of how they make my legs look and partly because I can't stand wearing shoes without stockings.

  7. Just going thru some of your fab back issues and found this one to re-read and decided to comment - sure glad for Kate Middleton for almost always being seen wearing hose with her dresses and skirts. As many others have said 'hose always makes my legs look better" and I just am not of the option to "leave home without them on" - thanks for holding all your posts in history so we can read and re-read ad desired - have a fab 2024
