In boy mode, I went to the dry cleaners to drop off the dress I wore Saturday night. A guy about my age, maybe older waited on me.
"Can I help you?"
"I need this dress cleaned and pressed."
The cleaner picked up the dress, inspected it, then did the paperwork. As he handed me a receipt, he jokingly remarked, "I assume this is your wife's dress and not yours."
I was surprised by his remark and did not know what to say, so I just smiled.
The dress will be ready later this week. I think I will pick it up during my lunch hour on Halloween.

To Assume~ make an arse of ones self and moi! Perhaps a bit of stand up, "does it matter?" would have been simple enough.. but I know of which you speak, a thousand phrases always come to mind post encounters.
ReplyDeleteI'll assume! lol you'll be Stana?
ReplyDeleteThat's a bingo!
DeletePersonally i would have found the comment rather rude, whose business of his is it whose dress it was anyway, his business was to clean it. Would love to have retorted with a 'i assume this isn't your own business?' retort :)

I've had this situation when buying lee press on nails on a three occasions. All three times it was with a different clerk, twice the comment was "Well I know these CAN'T be for you." the other time the comment was "I hope these aren't for you!"
ReplyDeleteThe last time . I was ready with a comeback, if you remember my Femulate column They’re for me!

I proudly spouted out my rehearsed line, They're for me! I'm transgendered.
The look on the clerks face as she stammered out Oh....Oh....umm...Oh... really... Ok..ummm was embarrassment, shock, and awkwardness, and astonishment.
Yes honey I thought I'm trans deal with it!!!
When you pick up, be sure to say "is MY dress ready?" :)
