Gadgets

165980829 Now that I own an iPhone, I am considering not lugging my laptop and digital camera to Dayton.

With my iPhone, I can write and post to my blog, do e-mail, and take photos.

If I bring my digital camera to take photos for blog posts from Dayton, then I have to bring my laptop because it is my only gateway for transferring photos from my camera to the blogosphere. Bringing the camera and laptop also necessitates bringing their battery chargers, a spare camera battery, a cable to connect the two, and a bag to carry the laptop.

I can type faster and more accurately with my laptop, but to tell the truth, during Hamvention there is not much time to blog. I usually post a few words and a photo each day, which is as easy as pie with my iPhone.

What would you do?

  1. I generally fly light and drive loaded. If my camera in my phone was good, and the posts are small, and I was flying, phone only. The bigger keyboard of the laptop comes in handy though, so if i was driving, it is easy enough to bring along.

  2. I am sure that there is adequate room in the trusty subaru to throw in you laptop, case and camera. While I have been on enough 'business' trips that have absolutely no spare time in the schedule do do anything you never know if an opportunity will arise at the same time the writing muse strikes and you have to try to capture your thoughts on a I-phone.

  3. Dear Stana,

I've owned an iPhone ever since the first model in 2007. My current model is the iPhone 4S. The camera and camera software on every iPhone model from the 4 on up is excellent, and probably as good as all but the very expensive separate cameras. Assuming you have an iPhone 4, 4S, or 5, I suggest you use it as your primary still and video camera for your trip. Those 3 models also allow SYNCing to iTunes wirelessly to iCloud (and without needing to bring your MAC or PC with iTunes on it).

I have been away from home for one week and operated fine with just the iPhone. However, for longer trips away from home, I do bring my laptop PC. I never bring a dedicated camera. My iPhone takes as good or better stills and videos than my approximately 10 year-old Kodak digital camera.

If you decide on iPhone-ONLY, be sure to bring its charger.

    Love,

    Sheila.

Consider not cd-ing on this trip. you really don't pass as well as you think you do.

  5. Forget what Lumpy said. I would take both iPhone and laptop. No need for separate camera.

No brainer, (especially as you seem to be concerned about slim lining your luggage!) Take the Iphone leave the rest at home.

  9. Dear Stana,

Although I've never met you in person, you are all-woman in all the photos you've posted. So, I certainly do not agree with Lumpy. He or she apparently just ignored the fact that you have already attended a few Ham Radio conventions "en femme" and were universally accepted. Also, I believe you have a wonderful and reasonable attitude that doesn't put the emphasis on "passing", but rather "acceptance and being treated with respect" (although based on your photos and writings, I think you do pass).

99% of the posts to your articles are considerate of you, but I admire your fairness and open-mindedness in approving the few that are critical of you. But I just love you, and have never even come close to having any critical thoughts about you and your ideas.

So, the operative phrase for your upcoming convention is ...

    YOU GO, GIRL!

    Love,

    Sheila.
