Your finding of an early 1950's issue of CONFIDENTIAL reminded me of a circa-1952 issue of either LIFE or LOOK magazine that had a feature story with photos on the return of transsexual Christine Jorgensen to New York City after her SRS (Sex Reassignment Surgery). I seem to remember that a full page photo of her appeared on the cover (but I may be wrong -- it may have appeared inside the magazine). The black-and-white photo (common back in the early 1950's) showed her wearing a delightfully feminine full-skirted dress over many petticoats (or possibly crinolines).
If you or any of your readers know where I might find a copy of that magazine or at least just the article and photos, please post the info here on Stana's wonderful blog. I have found lots of info and photos of Christine on the web (Wikipedia, her official memorial website, other websites, etc.), but have never found that issue of LIFE or LOOK magazine. I was 8 years old in 1952, and was THRILLED at seeing her photos and article.
On old magazines, might search eBay for titles. I found a couple of old "Transvestite" newsletters on eBay for $5.00 each. A 1993 issue of "Femanine" Published by Tania Volen, Inc. and a 1992 issue of "Alicia's TV Girl Talk" published by A.M.L. Ent.

How wonderful it is to see a man accepted and allowed to be a total woman for another man. To think this took place back in 1952.
ReplyDeleteI'm soooo happy to know I wasn't wrong! This article actually brought tears to my eyes, Stana!

ReplyDeleteSheila ---You can search all issues of Life magazine here, but I found nothing about Christine Jorgensen when I looked.
