me in high heels

The 9 Chickwood Lane "men in high heels" saga continues today.

One of the female students at outreach on Tuesday asked me how did I learn to walk in high heels. (At the time, I was wearing my black patent Mary Jane peep-toe pumps with 3 to 4 inch stiletto heels, which, by the way, are very comfortable for a pump with that high a heel.)

I started wearing heels when I was 12 years old and from the start, I took to heels like a duck takes to webbed feet. I do not recall ever having any trouble walking in heels.

My highest shoes are a pair of platform Mary Jane pumps with a 5-inch heel and I can walk fine in those, too, but I don't wear them when I drive. My Subaru has a manual transmission and I found it difficult to manage the three pedals in 5-inch platform heels. I think the platform had more to do with the problem than the height of the heel, but nevertheless, I will never drive wearing those shoes again.

I don't have a problem walking in 4 to 5 inch heels either. This has never been a problem. My problem is finding stylish heels that fit correctly and are comfortable. They seem to stop at size 9 1/2 or 10. What are the larger girls supposed to wear?

  2. Anonymous --- I rely on two sources for high heels in my size (11): Payless and Newport-News. Payless's sizes vary, so you should visit the store and try on the shoes before you buy them. On the other hand, all the shoes I have bought from Newport-News are consistent in comfort and fit and I order them online without worrying about returning them.

  3. Staci, same here with 'learning' to walk in heels. I was walking in heels since I was 6 or 7. Seems to be second nature.

While I cannot stand wearing them more then 3 or 4 hours I can quickly walk down stairs in my 5" Jessica Simpson heels without touching the heels to the steps.

  4. Lynn --- My mother always said I walked "tippy toe;" maybe that helped!

  5. As a child I was always told I had bad posture. My mother would say, "Stand up straight." But when wearing high heels I notice my posture improves. It has to or otherwise I would fall straight on my "A.."

  6. It's all about the posture! As long as you stand up straight and wear your heels in short bursts you can ensure your not doing an unsightly hobble!
